Farms across the country fling open their gates this Sunday to welcome families onto their farms for a behind-the-scenes look at what they do.

A brilliant (and free) day out for families, LEAF Open Farm Sunday is on June 12 and is a great opportunity for kids to get up close to farm animals and machinery and learn all about where their food comes from.

Most farms put on a great show and often offer fun activities aimed at kids. Activities range from machinery displays, tractor and trailer rides to demonstratins, sheep shearing, nature walks and more.

This year’s focus is on health and many events will have interactive activities connected to health on the farm, such as worm counts, pond dipping and hunting for mini beasts. Visitors will also learn how farmers manage a healthy environment for wildlife to thrive, exploring field margins, hedges and woodland too.

‘Ever wondered what role worms play in food production or why they’re important for healthy soil?’ says Annabel Shackleton, LEAF Open Farm Sunday Manager. ‘Or why farmers check water quality by looking for the presence of invertebrates? This year’s LEAF Open Farm Sunday is your chance to find out the answers, as we explore how farmers help produce healthy, nutritious food for our health and the health of the planet.’

Some events will continue throughout June. Check out when and where events near you are happening at Open Farm Sunday.
