Weather against you? Time not on your side? Fret not – research shows that just a short 10-minute run is all you need to boost your mood and give your brain a boost.

Researchers in Japan found that when participants ran at a moderate intensity (50 per cent of their maximum effort), it boosted blood flow to their brain’s bilateral prefrontal cortex - the part of the brain that plays an important role in controlling mood and executive functions.

What’s more it took just 10 minutes to see this brain-boosting effect, according to the University of Tsukuba research.

After 10 minutes on the treadmill, the runners took a test to measure reaction times in brain processing (known as a Stroop Colour and Word Test). Results showed a spike in activation of their brain’s prefrontal cortex. After running, participants also reported being in a better mood.

‘Given the extent of executive control required in coordinating balance, movement, and propulsion during running, it is logical that there would be increased neuronal activation in the prefrontal cortex and that other functions in this region would benefit from this increase in brain resources,’ explains Professor Hideaki Soya.

Even the most stubborn kids can usually be persuaded to get outside if it promises to be quick. So, get the bikes, scooters or buggy out, and lace up.
